Whilst by no means a new look, shabby chic kitchens are now one of the most sought after kitchen styles, particularly in country or period properties. To create the perfect kitchen in this style, you will need to think about the walls and floors as well as the furniture, including such pieces as shabby chic shelves.
Walls are generally best painted in white or off-white to maximise the amount of light. You could even try painting a pattern of wide pastel and white stripes. If wallpaper is more to your taste, a muted floral pattern will work best. Floor boards should be plain wood or painted white, or as an alternative you could make use of rustic tiles. If you can not stretch to replacing the flooring then simply add lots of kitchen mats or rugs in muted pink, blue, green, or floral designs.
Distressed Wall Shelves
The right choice of shabby chic shelves will also help you create your perfect shabby chic kitchen. For those of you with a creative streak you could make your own shelves. There are a couple of ways that you could approach it, the easiest option is to find old shelves that you like the style of but not the colour. Mix white emulsion with water, half and half for a light coverage and a third of water to two thirds of paint for a heavier coverage. Paint the shelves and leave to dry for 24 hours, then use sandpaper to sand down areas to help create a shabby chic look.
If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, you could make your shelves from scratch. We have seen an example of some amazing shabby chic shelves, made out of cotton reels and old pottery boards. Simply glue together old fashioned wooden cotton reels to make the supports, paint and sand them to give them a wonderful distressed look and then use the old pottery boards (or any distressed looking boards that you can find) for the shelves.
For most people creating your own shelves and furniture may seems like too daunting a task, and luckily now there are many items on the market that are created to capture the distressed, worn look.
Think timeless elegance, make use of big solid items of furniture that already have that worn, distressed look. Pay particular attention to any hardware on the furniture, you should aim to have glass or vintage ceramic knobs which will look more authentic. You want pieces that have an inviting, warm feel to them, capturing the grace and style of a bygone era.
Once you have the bigger pieces of furniture, you will need to decide on your shabby chic shelves. Remember, the furniture and shelves do not have to match, you just need to make sure they are closely related in colour (usually whites, creams, or other pastels). You also need to choose the items that you place on them with great care to make sure that you truly capture the correct style. You should think about the colours and textures of the items. Make use of old battered recipe books, white china, old alarm clocks, victorian chamber pots, candle votives, early spice racks, sepia framed photos, imperial kitchen scales, and of course lots and lots of fresh flowers.
Have fun and mix items together on your shabby chic shelves to create a great look, whilst making it seem like an effortless arrangement. Try and be understated, you do not need to have every single item distressed, miss-matched or floral. Make sure that your own personality is reflected in your perfect shabby chic kitchen and it will be a place that is uniquely you.
